The Design
This soft and luxurious solid-color wool rug has a striped relief that’s painstakingly carved out by hand using scissors. Inspiration for the Ridge Rug came from the monochromatic color field paintings of Brice Marden. Early critiques of his work questioned this singular use of color, suggesting a lack of emotional range, to which he explained that each piece was a concentration of feelings in layers.” We agree: pools of playful color with some texture are the best thing you can do for any space. Fern is a mossy green.
The Material
A scissor-cut rug with a soft, satisfying footfall and pleasing weight, Ridge is woven with premium New Zealand wool, beloved for its softness and long fibers. Like all wools, it has a hydrophobic layer which repels dust and dirt, and lanolin, which provides its trademark luster and protects the fiber from breaking or shedding. It’s hand-loomed onto a Sardinian wool weft for comfort and a sturdy cotton warp.
The Maker
Our partner is a third-generation family-run weaving house in Bhadohi, India. They specialize in plush pile rugs, and their knowledge helped us improve durability and minimize shedding. Their values are twofold: creating the highest-quality product and taking care of their team, supporting their weavers in whatever they need.
The Designer
Our in-house, all-star design team collaborates across three different countries. Based in Los Angeles, Istanbul, and Mumbai, they put a lot of thought into each and every collection they design. Starting with the weave itself, they determine material and technique, then create moodboards to capture the look and feel before starting to design. When designs are finalized, they conduct an extensive sampling process, perfecting each style and color before it goes to production.
About Custom Rugs
Custom rugs are final sale from the time of purchase. The estimated ship time of your custom item can be found below the “Add to Cart” button and varies based on size. Once the custom piece is is produced it is first shipped to our warehouse for a final inspection before we send it to you.
Because our custom rugs are woven by hand, there will be natural variations in color, and final sizes can vary by up to 2″ in length and width.
- We recommend that you regularly vacuum your rug to remove dirt and grime. Depending on how heavily your rug is used, just once or twice a month is adequate. Too much vacuuming can wear down the knots and fibers more quickly. If you have a suction attachment on your vacuum cleaner, use that instead of a rotary vacuum.
- Vacuum on low power with a non-rotary (no spinning brush) vacuum or suction attachment only.
- Every few months, you’ll also want to flip your rug over and vacuum the back to get the grit out of the foundation of the rug. It also helps to rotate your rug once a year to ensure even wear over time.
- Every 3-5 years, we recommend getting your rug professionally hand-washed. Please do not take it to get steam or dry cleaned-this will almost certainly damage the rug! Hand-washing requires the use of a pH-balanced shampoo, worked into the rug by hand with a soft-bristled brush, before being rinsed thoroughly. This process should be repeated a few times.
- Due to the hand-crafted nature of our rugs, you can expect to see light shedding, matting, and signs of fiber and thread breakage over time. For high traffic areas, these effects may occur more quickly and easily.
- Spot cleaning instructions:
- Lightly dampen a paper towel or cloth with clean water
- Gently blot the affected area with your damp towel or cloth to dilute the stain
- If the stain persists, try using an unscented, citrus-free, clear soap to avoid bleaching the textile.
- Repeat this process until the stain is removed
- From time to time you may spot tiny flecks of dried hay or grass woven within the fibers-traces of the grazing pastures where the sheep once roamed. These can be removed by hand or with tweezers.
- Because this rug is made from natural wool rich in lanolin, it may release a subtle sheep-like scent when damp. It’s simply the fiber’s natural character, and it will disappear once dry.
