In early modern France, a chemise was a simple undergarment worn next to the skin by both women and men. It helped keep outer clothes clean because it absorbed sweat and could be washed more easily.

Chemises were loose and usually made from basic shapes of fabric, with a wide neckline and long sleeves. They often reached the knees or ankles and could also be worn as a nightgown.

Most chemises were made from hemp or linen. Hemp was strong but a bit rough at first, while linen was softer and more comfortable. Cotton chemises became more common later and were the softest of all.

This chemise, has not been washed and shows signs of wear and tear. The chemise is a mix of hemp with cotton sleeves and has an RE monogram. Approximate size 6-8.

Great fabric if you decide to cut up and use in a stitching project.
